This article examines Michel de Certeau’s thought from a social sciences perspective in order to conceptualize communication as a situated social practice. Drawing on his contributions on everyday practices, temporalities, space, enunciation, and cultural circulation, it analyzes meaning-making as a process embedded in social experience and shaped by power relations and cultural
mediations. The argument engages with Maigret, Burke, and Latin American readings of Certeau to examine the tension between institutional operations that seek to stabilize meaning and social uses that reinterpret discourses, spaces, and symbolic repertoires. Finally, the article reconstructs several trajectories of Certeau’s reception in Latin America and considers the analytical value of this perspective for studying communication in contexts of inequality, cultural heterogeneity, and institutional fragmentation.
